Former “Good Times” star John Amos died from natural causes on August 21, his family confirmed in a statement on Tuesday. He was 84.

Amos played stern Evans family patriarch James Evans on Norman Lear’s hit situation comedy “Good Times” in the 1970s.

His son Kelly Christopher Amos announced his death in a statement, saying the Emmy-nominated actor died in Los Angeles on August 21 of natural causes.

“It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned,” he wrote. “He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.”

Fans of “The West Wing” will also recognize John for his recurring role as Admiral Percy Fitzwallace … acting opposite Martin Sheen and the late John Spencer.

John is survived by his daughter, Shannon (pictured), and son, K.C., who he welcomed with ex-wife Noel Mickelson. The actor’s children disagreed over his medical care and accused each other of elder abuse, prompting investigations by the authorities. The cases were eventually closed due to lack of evidence.
