A 2023 Pew Research Center survey found that tattoos are more common among lower-income Americans than higher-income groups

According to the survey, 43% of lower-income adults reported having at least one tattoo, compared with 31% of middle-income adults and 21% of upper-income adults. The data also showed that tattoo prevalence generally declines as income and educational attainment increase.

Researchers emphasize, however, that these are population-level trends not judgments about individuals. Tattoos do not determine a person’s success, intelligence, or work ethic, and people with tattoos can be found across every profession and income level.
