Chapter 1 – The Bread on the Corner
The morning mist hung low over the cracked cobblestones of the old district.
Elena wiped her flour-dusted hands against her faded cotton apron.
Her fingers were stiff with arthritis, swollen at the knuckles from decades of kneading dough before sunrise.
She stood in front of the narrow bakery doorway, holding a chipped porcelain bowl filled with warm stew and thick crusts of bread.
Three neighborhood children sat huddled on the stone curb across from her.
Their knees were scraped raw.
Their coats were two sizes too small, held together by safety pins and frayed string.
Elena did not ask for money.
She never had.
For forty years, through economic collapses, strikes, and freezing winters, she had placed warm food into the hands of children who had nowhere else to turn.
She stepped off the curb, her worn leather shoes scuffing against the gravel.
She knelt slowly, her knees groaning under her weight.
“Eat while it’s hot, little ones,” Elena whispered, her voice gentle as falling leaves.
The youngest child looked up, dark eyes wide with cautious hunger.
He took a piece of crust with both hands, clutching it to his chest as if it might vanish into thin air.
Elena smiled softly.
It was the exact same look she had seen on three other faces, on this exact same curb, twenty years ago.
Three boys who had sat silently in the cold, too weak from hunger even to cry.
She had given them what little stew she had left that night.
They had eaten in ravenous silence and disappeared into the fog.

Then, from the end of the avenue, the low, guttural roar of high-performance engines shattered the morning quiet.
