Chapter 1: The Lie That Destroyed a Family

“HE PUSHED ME! MARCUS, HE PUSHED ME!””

Vanessa Reed’s scream tore through the grand foyer of Atlanta’s most expensive private mansion just as her body struck the polished marble floor.

One hand clutched her pregnant belly. The other reached desperately toward the staircase, her diamond wedding ring flashing beneath the crystal chandelier.

For a moment, seventy-eight-year-old Robert Reed could only stare.

His silver walking cane lay several feet away. His hands trembled in the air, still extended toward the woman he had tried to catch when she stumbled.

“Vanessa,” he whispered.

“Sweetheart, I didn’t push you.””

She recoiled as though he had raised a weapon.

“DON’T TOUCH ME!””

Robert stumbled backward.

“I was trying to help you. You looked dizzy, and I thought you were going to fall.””

“My baby!”” Vanessa cried.

“Somebody, please! My baby!””

Her voice echoed through the mansion, reaching the second floor.

A door slammed.

Heavy footsteps thundered down the sweeping staircase.

Marcus Reed appeared at the landing, his white dress shirt half-unbuttoned and his dark hair disheveled. At thirty-five, he carried himself like a man accustomed to giving orders and watching everyone obey.

He had inherited his father’s broad shoulders, sharp features, and commanding presence.

He had also inherited Reed Atlantic Holdings, a multimillion-dollar real estate empire Robert had spent forty years building.

“What happened?”” Marcus demanded.

Vanessa looked up at him, tears streaming down her cheeks.

“Your father pushed me!””

Marcus stopped halfway down the staircase.

His eyes shifted toward Robert.

The old man immediately shook his head.

“No, Marcus. That’s not what happened. She was standing near the table, and she suddenly—”

Marcus crossed the remaining steps.

“Did you touch my wife?””

“Son, listen to me.””

“DID YOU TOUCH HER?””

Robert raised both hands.

“I reached out because she was losing her balance. I never pushed her.””

Vanessa let out a strangled sob.

“He’s lying! He was angry with me! He said I had no right to interfere in family business!””
