While promoting her new ABC show “Queens” on “The Daily Show,” the former Philadelphia rapper-turned-actress, Eve, shared her perspective on the current state of hip-hop compared to her early experiences in the late 1990s and early 2000s. When asked about her thoughts on today’s hip-hop scene, she candidly expressed that she believes it lacks originality.
Eve conveyed to Trevor Noah, “There are a lot of clones. Gone are the days when being different was admired. Now I see a lot of the same things, and that bothers me. For me, it makes it dull a lot of the time.” Despite her critique, she also acknowledged her admiration for some of the current artists, stating, “Not everyone, because there are some cool artists I love.”
As the First Lady of Ruff Ryders, Eve considers herself fortunate to have stayed true to her authentic self throughout her career. Reflecting on her time with Ruff Ryders, she shared, “I was lucky. They never tried to change me at Ruff Ryders. Even more than anything else, they tried to hide me. They did not want me to be naked. ‘No, you need to put this vest on now,’ they told her.”
However, Eve did express a degree of envy for the freedom and flexibility that contemporary artists enjoy. She appreciates the fact that today’s artists can navigate their careers without the need for a big name or someone else’s endorsement. They have the freedom to find and connect with their audience on their own terms.
In her role as Brianna, also known as Professor Sex, a member of the hip-hop group Nasty Bitches in the 1990s, on ABC’s new show “Queens,” Eve joins a cast that includes Brandy, Naturi Naughton, and Nadine Velazquez.
In addition to her career in the entertainment industry, Eve recently announced that she is expecting her first child with her husband Maximillion Cooper, adding a new and exciting chapter to her life.
