J. Alphonse Nicholson Has Been Acting Since 2013, But May Be On His Way To His First Emmy

J. Alphonse Nicholson, widely recognized for his role as Lil Murda in P. Valley, has been actively involved in acting since 2013, gaining his first break in the 2013 film “Don’t Know Yet” directed by Terry Linehan. Prior to his breakout role, he showcased his talent in various film and television projects, including notable appearances in “Mr. Robot,” “Luke Cage,” “Chicago P.D.,” “Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker,” and “Just Mercy.”

While J. Alphonse Nicholson is now receiving well-deserved recognition for his portrayal of Lil Murda, the character has sparked controversy due to its complexity. Lil Murda grapples with the challenges of a burgeoning music career while navigating his sexuality as a black gay man. The portrayal of intimate scenes between two masculine black men on screen garnered backlash from some, including celebrities like Plies and Lil Duval.

Despite the criticism, P. Valley’s viewership has soared, with the season two premiere attracting 4.5 million multiplatform viewers in the United States, breaking Starz’s record for the largest season-over-season growth. The show’s co-executive producer responded to critics, urging them to find alternative viewing if they were displeased.

J. Alphonse Nicholson’s potential Emmy win for his role as Lil Murda has become a topic of discussion, as revealed during a sit-down with Tamron Hall. Emotionally moved, Nicholson expressed gratitude for the opportunity to bring such a complex story to the screen and acknowledged the support from fans.

Looking ahead, J. Alphonse Nicholson is preparing for his role in “Black Spartan,” a football drama by Ben Cory Jones. In this project, he will portray Jimmy Raye, the first black quarterback to win a national championship in 1966 with Michigan State. As he continues to diversify his acting portfolio, Nicholson remains a powerful representation for audiences.
